Students arrested on sex-in-class allegations

Five fifth-graders were arrested Tuesday after an investigation into allegations that students had sex in an unsupervised classroom, Union Parish Sheriff Bob Buckley said.

"After 44 years of doing this work, nothing shocks me anymore," Buckley said. "But this comes pretty close."

Is this some problem that we just have to learn how to deal with? These are young children who were left alone in a classroom for a few minutes.

Four students — two 11-year-old girls, a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy — were arrested on charges of obscenity, a felony. An 11-year-old boy who was the alleged lookout was charged with being an accessory after the fact, Buckley said.

Is this just a problem with these large, inner-city, urban schools? No.

The school, which Buckley described as a "quiet little small-town school," has grades kindergarten through 12.

We live in an extremely sexualized society. It is perpetuated by sex depicted on television that these children watch every day. Who knows what else they have been exposed to? This was a group activity that was condoned by all 5 children present in the room. They knew it was wrong or they wouldn't have had a "lookout". However, they must have felt that it was well worth the risk. This isn't just "boys will be boys" and "girls will be girls" stuff.

"I'm sure they're like everybody else up here, shocked that children that age would be indulging in sex acts, especially with witnesses," Buckley said. "Children now are subjected to sex in music and movies these days. They are certainly are a lot more knowledgeable now."

Why be shocked? What else would you expect?
